A collection of correspondence, telegrams, accounts, receipts, commissions, legal documents etc., relating to the career of Sir Thomas McIlwraith. The majority of the correspondence relates to politics but some personal and financial matters are mentioned. There are also some financial records of Beaufort Station. Some of the more significant subjects mentioned are the proposed appointment of Sir Henry Blake as Govenor of Queensland, the proposed transcontinental railway, the attempted annexation of New Guinea in 1883, investment possibilities, etc. A large part of the collection consists of correspondence between McIlwraith and Sir Arthur Palmer on a wide variety of subjects. Other correspondents include John Forrest, Sir Anthony Musgrave, Charles Stirling, James Murdock, Oscar de Satge, Sir Charles Lilly and Sir Henry Parkes.
